    About Virginia

West Virginia (pop: 1,816,856 )is a state in the region of Appalachia and is generally known as The Mountain State. West Virginia broke away from the Commonwealth of Virginia during the American Civil War and was admitted to the Union as a separate state on June 20, 1863. It is actually the only state formed as a direct result of the American Civil War.

West Virginia is the only state located entirely within the Appalachian Mountain range, and in which all areas are mountainous; for this reason it is nicknamed The Mountain State. Because of this mountainous terrain it has little agriculture and one of the major resources in West Virginia's economy is coal.

The state's capital and largest city is Charleston.
